Commission: Is She Really ... by WanderingKotka Commission: Is She Really ... by WanderingKotka
"Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window I'm staring while my coffee grows cold
Look over there! (Where?)
There's a lady that I used to know
She's married now or engaged or something so I'm told

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?"
- Joe Jackson, "Is She Really Going Out With Him" [link]

No, this isn't a case of gratuitous song-lyric posting, :iconcelamowari: was actually inspired by that Joe Jackson lyric to come around asking for a picture of his characters Firegirl and Blue Behemoth out for a romantic date at Chez Cafe. He told me I was free to keep it cute and cartoony, and so I did! I really enjoyed tooning up Firegirl and Blue Behemoth--they just lend themselves well to this style.

Are these two really an item? How does that even work? You'll have to ask :iconcelamowari: or stop by his blog [link] !

Enjoy!

I tried to take his look from your card of him, so credit due to you on that! I loved what you did with his character.

I mean, why not, he looks like a classy guy. :3b I mean, I think they both look excellent, too, Blue Behemoth in those shades and tie (lol!) and Firegirl looking absolutely effortlessly energetic, both about ready to bring some superhero life to this unprepared cafe. Toony style all the way for them both!

Exactly! Look at that tie. That is the tie of a classy gent. And Firegirl, well, she's fabulous no matter what she does. XD

And to top it off, I have only just now appreciated that the colors are blue and banana yellow. Classy. Gent.

Oh yes. To go back to the gorilla joke, where does an 800-pound ape-man eat? Anywhere he wants.
Really, there are so many you could tell, Blue Behemoth might get sick of them. :3

Only just now? But you're in Michigan! You're surrounded by blue and banana yellow!

Oh man, there are so many jokes. I can imagine a whole storyline involving those jokes as chapter or section headers. XD

Oh, you're right, it is kind of maize and blue!
I'd just meant ape-man and Banana Yellow, har-dee-har, but I guess I really didn't care for football and I ended up suppressing the notion of blue and yellow. But... haha, wow, yeah, you're right. It's Michigan vs. State weekend, too, and I don't even know how that went/how it's going...

This. Should happen. Tell Celamowari this.

Well, obviously I love this. I'm especially pleased since I was worried this idea might just be too crazy!

I am very happy to be proven wrong.

I particularly like the juxtaposition of the comely lady (which is one of your specialties) with the oversized blue-furred gorilla guy in a suit (which is probably not anyone's specialty!). It just...works, somehow.

Haha! I would hope so! (Otherwise I have to crack the file back open and get to fixing it!) I admit that part of me was going "What? I . . . a gorilla? But . . . no!" but most of me was going "YES. This is crazy and brilliant and YES." Thankfully the fun part of me is a lot louder than the boring part of me when it comes to drawing things.

That's really what I love too. It's like the sitcom standard of a slamming gal with an overweight, insensitive manchild . . . only funnier. :) And without the overweight, insensitive, or manchild parts.

You can't go wrong referencing that song, if you ask me. :) I really like this--it's packed with detail and expressive figures and yet, has a wonderful almost storybook-esque quality to it. :) Very well done!

I know, right? Oddly enough, I never noted the bit about gorillas until Chris pointed it out. :) It does really look like I could pop a bit of text in there for a kids book . . . not quite my intent, but I like the effect. (That would be one weird kids book, but what the hey.) Thank you!

I think there is a market for books about dealing with jealousy and all that written for children, as I've always found it brings out the most childish bits of us. But then--I also think a sequel pic called "Look sharp!" should be in the offing. :)

I really do like how you managed to balance the less-than-serious detail of the cartoony world and anatomy along with the effusive warmth and happiness that these two seem to display as a couple. That's hard to do, and you really pulled it off! :)

I honestly can't find anything to critiques here.
Marvelous concept.
Marvelous execution.
All around marvelous.

Thank you! Chris said I could keep it as toony as I pleased and I really couldn't see playing "giant blue ape takes hot redhead out for night on the town" straight. :D

PENGUIIIIIIN!

Well, even if you didn't play it straight, you did get across a lot of heart and sweetness in this toony piece. :)
Marvelous work! :)

And yes; the penguin community heartily approves of your artwork!

Exaaaactly.

Though it would appear that his date doesn't seem to mind the arrangement at all. ;)
