Commission: DeKalb TV by WanderingKotka Commission: DeKalb TV by WanderingKotka
For :iconcelamowari:, his broadcasting maven Whitney DeKalb.

From his profile on her:
Whitney DeKalb is the great-granddaughter of Ladd DeKalb, founder of the trailblazing but perennial also-ran DeKalb Television Network. A member of the DeKalb Network board of directors, Whitney has been seeking a way to better compete with the Major Broadcasting System (MBS) and the United Broadcasting Company (UBC). She thinks she has finally found one by forging a strategic alliance with Mann Creations.

More Major City goodness can be seen on his dA and his blog: [link]

I had a lot of fun playing with the retro-modern style that is a big part of :iconcelamowari:'s Major City universe. The TV, the furniture, the ray-gun remote control . . .

I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed making it! There are some bits that nag at me now that I look at it several weeks later, but I'm still proud of it overall. :)

I love this so much. I don't know how, but you've managed to pick colors that look kind of ... faded? Like this is a magazine article that's been sitting in somebody's basement for a few years. That's really impressive.

Thank you! I think it's how I shaded it . . . all the shadows are done with the same khaki-ish color, set to multiply. I think that's why it has that faded look. That plus the paper texture on top. :)

Ah! That'd make sense. The effect is absolutely perfect.

Thank you! I was inspired by looking at vintage illustrated ads. I'd love to be able to draw like that.

You should know how much *I* love this. You took about a dozen different references and mixed them all together in a pic that still as a gorgeous lady. I mean, that is solid gold! :)

You know, your excitement that you got to draw a retro TV rather than a flatscreen was a joy to me. You really went all out on the retro future look, and found a canny way to incorporate that DeKalb logo. Honestly, this came out even better than I could've hoped.

You accidentally left out that profile. ;) Here it is for you -

Honestly, this is fantastic and clever work. The adaptation of the test pattern alone is worth the price of admission!

You have no idea (or perhaps you do!) how much I strained my brain to make it all work. I'm still surprised it did!

I have a secret love for old sets. I remember being heartbroken when our old (faux)wood-panelled TV died. I swear, the power button on that thing was the size of my thumb.

Oops! You know, I realized that mistake when I woke up this morning but knew I'd already be too late. I'm going back to edit it now!

Thank you again for letting my draw this gal, she was a real challenge and a joy to bring to life!

Haha, I bet I do! It strained my brain just to imagine it all working together!

It probably was. I find the older ones look so much more interesting to me, so I approve of this obsession.

No problem, especially since I am pretty sure I left some words out of my comment! :p

It was a lot of fun for me to see where it all ended up. Seriously, loving it!

I love those retro-style antennas. Aren't on near enough things. :) I really like this--you did a great job of accurately capturing a past that never happened, yet easily could've. The "Mad Men" fan in me appreciates this in way I cannot begin to express. :) Excellent work! Very well done!

I know, right? More things need retro antennae. :) You know, Mad Men was one of my main inspirations for this. (Even though I have yet to watch it, shame!) I'm glad you dug it!
